With its dimensions, there's room for a dedicated number pad, though outside of Excel jockeys we don't see many Inspiron 1750 users taking advantage of it. It measures 16.1 inches wide by 10.5 inches deep and is only 1.4 inches thick along its back edge (that number drops to 1.1 inches thick along its front edge). The laptop feels spacious without feeling bulky. At 6.6 pounds, Apple's 17-inch MacBook Pro (Unibody) is one of the few desktop replacements that weighs less than 7 pounds, and it's only a hair lighter than the Inspiron 1750. By comparison, the Dell Studio 1737 weighs 7.5 pounds most 17-inch laptops surpass the 7 pound mark. The Inspiron 1750 does feel light for such a big laptop, however, weighing in at a relatively trim 6.7 pounds. The large, plastic chassis flexes somewhat, but not to a degree that makes the laptop feel cheap or flimsy. (Staples also sells the same laptop in red or black Dell offers a rainbow of colors on its Web site.) A glossy, black bezel frames the display, and the keyboard tray is silver. The system won't impress gamers, video editors, and other power users on the prowl for a big, multimedia powerhouse, but it offers ample performance for mainstream use, particularly for the price. The Dell Inspiron 1750 (2211MBU) ($729.98 list) falls into the desktop replacement category by virtue of its roomy 17.3-inch display, but in practice it's not going to replace your desktop unless you're trading in an old or entry-level PC.
